18,000 years ago at Mizyn in northern Ukraine, carvers cut small female figurines from the very centre of mammoth tusks. Then they engraved the tusk’s hidden pattern back onto them. The zigzags and meanders on their backs copy the Schreger lines and growth rings inside the ivory. On one figurine the meander almost traces the natural rings. Did they see human shapes in the ivory, or use the grain as a template?
