The line that stays with me is "what has changed is the default."

The ritual reading was never unfounded — the incised crania are real, the skull chamber at Sefertepe is real. It just never had to survive a comparison. 928 fragments with no intact burial anywhere is a result that can't distinguish "somebody arranged this" from "nobody has dug the right trench yet," and for thirty years those two arrived looking identical.

What broke it wasn't more scattered bone. It was one primary inhumation that demonstrably never moved — the same serrated fractures and calcareous cracking showing up in a grave where nobody could have smashed anything. A control, finally, from outside the assemblage that raised the question in the first place.

And the detail I can't stop turning over: the second burial was found in 2012, sealed again for want of time, and reopened in 2022. The thing that reset the default had already been located. It sat there for a decade with the answer in it.

Lovely piece — thank you.

Thirty years of digging, 928 random pieces of people, and FINALLY they find two burials. I love archaeology!

And after all the theories about what happened to those bones, I love that at least part of the answer may simply be: they slid downhill.

Although I'm very happy the weird skull business is still weird. I don't want everything explained away!

As predicted, there are still more mysteries and discoveries at this place to come.
