Long before Pythagoras formulated the mathematical ratios of pitch, scribes in the city-states of ancient Sumer were systematically mapping acoustic theory onto wet clay. A 26th-century BC cuneiform fragment contemporaneous with the Early Dynastic III period—preserves what stands as the oldest known administrative and educational record of musical instruments in human history.
A lexical list records nine types of musical strings, twenty-three types of musical instruments and musical terminology, including stringed instruments such as harps and lyres, as well as several instruments whose identities remain unknown. The list also includes lapis lazuli, beds, copper utensils, textiles, domestic animals and sinews, jewellery, weapons, leather components of yokes, straps and sacks, varieties of sheep, knives, aromatics and perfumes, objects made of reed, grains and flours, and much more.
Uncovered in modern Iraq and preserved within the corpus of Early Dynastic lexical lists, this tablet fragment (analogous to recensions recorded at Fara and Tell Abu Salabikh) reveals that music in Mesopotamia was not merely an informal oral art. It was a rigorous, standardized discipline taught inside the edubba (the Sumerian scribal academy).
The Artifact: Lexical Precision in Cuneiform
The tablet belongs to the Mesopotamian genre of lexical lists—systematic glossaries used by scribes to codify language, professional titles, animals, and material culture. Rather than a poetic narrative, the text serves as a technical taxonomy.
The inscription itemizes nine distinct names for instrument strings alongside 23 separate types of musical instruments and acoustic terminology. Each entry is introduced by circular stylus depressions marking a new line—a standard formatting convention of 3rd-millennium BC scribal houses.
Among its most significant philological details is the inclusion of the word ki-na-ru. This marks the earliest recorded appearance of the Semitic root for stringed instruments, which migrated across millennia into the Ugaritic kinnaru and the biblical Hebrew kinnor (harp/lyre).
Acoustic Engineering of the 3rd Millennium BC
The string terminology documented on the tablet corresponds directly to physical artifacts excavated from sites like the Royal Cemetery of Ur (c. 2500 BC).
Mesopotamian musical theory relied on a heptatonic diatonic scale system generated through alternating intervals of fourths and fifths. The nine string terms recorded in these early lists provided the foundation for a standardized tuning cycle:
String Identification: Scribes assigned specific numbers and technical names to each string.
Interval Generation: Tuning procedures involved adjusting pairs of strings to establish symmetrical consonances (fourths, fifths, and thirds).
Modal Shifts: By tightening or loosening specific string pairs, musicians could cycle through seven distinct modal scales across an instrument’s soundboard.
Institutional Music Education in the Edubba
In early Sumerian society, musicians (nar) and ritual lamentation priests (gala) occupied formal positions within temple and palace administration. Performing sacred liturgy like the Balag or Ershemma required absolute precision.
The existence of this tablet demonstrates that musical instruction was integrated directly into the scribal curriculum. Students were required to memorize:
Instrument construction materials (boxwood, lapis lazuli, gold, copper).
Pitch hierarchy and string numbering conventions.
Functional classifications distinguishing handheld lyres, large bovine-headed frame harps, and reed instruments.

Another fascinating piece. Music history, Assyriology, linguistics. The more I learn of Sumer, the more fascinated I am and the more I want to learn.
Also, I noted that aromatics and perfumes were listed, so of course that part of my brain immediately started wondering what exactly they were made of and what they really smelled like.
If I could smell my way through Sumer for an afternoon — the perfumes, food, animals, reeds, clay, smoke, people, everything — I'd probably learn more about these people than I could from a hundred theoretical illustrations.
That's always my goal with history. I want to get close enough that these stop being "ancient people" and become people who lived in a real place that smelled, sounded, tasted and felt like something.
