About Ancient Content

Ancient Content is a publication about the ancient world: archaeology, early civilizations, and the objects and engineering that survived them. Most of what gets written about antiquity falls into one of two camps. Either it is locked behind academic paywalls and written for other specialists, or it is flattened into clickbait that treats the past as a series of mysteries nobody can explain. Neither does justice to the material. A tunnel dug from both ends through a mountain in the sixth century BC, meeting in the middle, is remarkable enough without embellishment. It just needs telling properly. So that is what this is. Written posts most days, plus short documentary-style films on subjects that deserve the extra time. Recent work has covered the water engineering of Eupalinos and the Persian qanats, the trade routes that carried lapis lazuli across half a continent, and the Antikythera mechanism. Subscribing is free, and every post lands in your inbox. Paid subscriptions are coming, and will carry the longer documentary work.
